The Biggest FPS games of Christmas 2011

Who will Santa let you shoot in the face?.
It's been an interesting year for shooters, with the arrival of big budget risk-takers like Bulletstorm - It's great! Why didn't more of you buy it? - and long-awaited blockbusters such as Rage. In between all that, Deus Ex: Human Revolution trashed convention, Crysis 2 trashed Manhattan, and Duke Nukem trashed his own reputation. Now, though, as we head towards December, things are starting to get serious.

Blizzard Announces New WoW Expansion: Mists of Pandaria

Blizzcon 2011 kicked off today, and the biggest announcement from the opening ceremonies was the development of a new expansion for World of Warcraft. Titled Mists of Pandaria, the expansion will focus on the battle between the Horde and the Alliance instead of a traditional Big Bad Enemy. There will be both a new race — Pandaren — and a new class — Monk. The level cap will be raised to 90, there will be "challenge mode" dungeons, and they're introducing a pet battle system. Blizzard also mentioned that people who buy a 12-month subscription to WoW will get a copy of Diablo 3 for free.

Op-Ed: If You Want To Fight Piracy, Make Better Games

Game publishers have it backward. They should use the carrot, not the stick, and reward people for doing the right thing when it comes to buying versus pirating.

Portal 2 Getting Map Editor

Valve Software is working on a second helping of downloadable content for Portal 2, and they've revealed that it will include an in-game map editor. It's planned for early next year, and it will allow players to create both single-player and co-op maps. The maps can be shared with others, and there will be a system to view and vote on other people's maps. In other Portal-related news, a reader sent in a video of his efforts to get GLaDOS running on his home computer. He writes, "I used Microsoft's Kinect technology as the platform and sound files from my copy of Portal 2 to create my own GLaDOS. My plan is to make the source code (but not the audio files) open source once it gets farther along. The technology has already been useful to my parents in helping them more easily navigate a computer."

The Good And Bad Of Kirby?s Return To Dreamland

I recently recommended that people skip the new Kirby game for the Wii, Kirby’s Return to Dreamland. I don’t hate the game. I just think you have better options. I also think you might like to see more of the game, since it’s a charmer and has good stuff in it. (more…)

Nintendo upgrading eShop with DLC and demo support

Underwhelmed by Nintendo's eShop? Give it time. Today, the company confirmed its upcoming firmware update for the 3DS will enhance the online outlet with long overdue features like support for game demos, DLC, and improved download options.

The improvements were outlined in Nintendo's latest financial briefing, and are part of a larger strategy to pick Nintendo up after one of its most disappointing fiscal years in recent memory. According to the document, part of its 'Digital Business Plan' includes opening up its eShop to future add-on content, something it says is ?a feature a number of software creators have been looking forward to...?

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection Pushed Back in Europe

Metal Gear Solid 2 HD

It won't be until early 2012 that Metal Gear fans in Europe are able to get their hands on the upcoming HD Collection.

The high-definition bundle includes several of the games you'd expect -- Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and Peace Walker. Also packed in are the original MSX2 titles Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake thanks to the versions of MGS2 and 3 being based on Substance and Subsistence, respectively. The one notable omission is the original Metal Gear Solid; in Japan a download code for the game is provided, but those in North America and Europe will have to track down a copy of the game without the help of the HD Collection.

Why I Talked About Chickens To A Room Full Of Game Developers

A couple of weeks ago, I attended GDC Online in Austin. I was covering the event, but I was also there as a speaker, giving a microtalk as part of a six-critic panel on great game storytelling. Joining me were N’Gai Croal (Hit Detection), Leigh Alexander (Gamasutra), John Davidson (CBS Interactive/Gamespot), and Ben Fritz (the L.A. Times). The talk was organised and led by Chris Dahlen, who is editor-in-chief at Kill Screen Magazine. (more…)

NASA Game Lets You Build Complex Space Networks

gregg writes "According to this article, a new game called NetworKing, developed at NASA's Ames Research Center, 'lets players build fast and efficient communication networks by first setting up command stations around the world and then linking them to orbiting satellites and space telescopes. Resources are earned throughout the game as players continue to acquire more clients.' The game is available for play through an internet browser, and also has downloadable versions for Windows and OS X."
