Activision has selected the winners of its first Independent Games Competition, the game publisher announced on Wednesday.

Battlefield 3: Don't worry about 720p and 30 FPS, says DICE (Battlefield 3)

Yesterday, Gaming Examiner asked DICE VP and General Manager, Karl Magnus Troedsson addressed the displeasure that some gamers have expressed over Battlefield 3 being limited to 30 frames-per-second (FPS), while its closest competition, Modern Warfare 3, has promised that it won't dip below 60 FPS. It's an especially poignant question since Battlefield 3 is being released on Oct 25 and Modern Warfare 3 comes out a few days later on Nov 8. With both games so close together, they'll have to compete to earn action fans' attention and — maybe more importantly — money.

Microsoft Launches Avatar Kinect

It uses Kinect to determine body position and facial expression and maps these in real-time onto an avatar displayed on the screen along with other similar avatars. The big question is: what is it good for? The simple answer is that you can hide behind your avatar. It is an opportunity for anyone who feels less than confident about their appearance to become a performer — Microsoft is running a stand-up-comedian-via-avatar competition, for example. The internet has long provided an anonymous platform where users can express themselves, and Avatar Kinect extends this to facial and body expressions. Darksiders II Skipping Multiplayer Due to Technical Challenges

Disappointing as it may be that Darksiders II will, like its predecessor, have you playing solo, it wasn't because of a lack of interest in multiplayer. On the contrary, developer Vigil Games has been interested in multiplayer since it began development on the first game, but the challenge of implementing it has proven to be too much thus far.

"When we put together the pitch for Darksiders 1, we wanted it to be multiplayer then," Director Marvin Donald told IGN. "It's just too much work when you're starting a brand new studio with a new [intellectual property] and you're building your own technology. We're also evolving the series into more of [a role-playing game], which was something else we wanted to do from the beginning, but we just didn't have the resources or time or money to do it the first time around and do it justice."

Donald explained that each character -- War in the first game, and Death in the sequel -- has its own animation set consisting of 800 to 1,000 animations. That might not be an issue if animations could be shared between characters, but that's not possible because each has different proportions.

Activision Trying To 'Reinvent' Guitar Hero

In an interview with Forbes, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick spoke about the rise and fall of the Guitar Hero franchise, saying "it became unsuccessful because it didn't have any nourishment and care." He then revealed that after effectively canceling the franchise last year, the company is looking for ways to resurrect it. "We said you know what, we need to regain our audience interest, and we really need to deliver inspired innovation. So we're going to take the products out of the market, and we're not going to tell anybody what we're doing for awhile, but we're going to stop selling Guitar Hero altogether. And then we're going to go back to the studios and we're going to use new studios and reinvent Guitar Hero. And so that's what we're doing with it now." Kotick also addressed Activision's lack of foresight regarding DJ Hero: "...in hindsight, if you step back – and it really would have been a simple thing to do – we should have said, 'Well, how many people really want to unleash their inner DJ?'"

Spider-Man Edge of Time ticking down to October 4

Comic-Con 2011: Activision confirms Beenox-developed action adventure will arrive this fall on 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS.

 

SAN DIEGO--Spider-Man: Edge of Time now has a firm date on which it is ticking toward. As part of Activision's preview event tonight, the publisher said its latest installment in its webslinging action adventure franchise will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, and 3DS on October 4.

The Edge of Time draws near.

With Activision-owned studio Beenox now the primary developer on the Spider-Man franchise, Edge of Time spans multiple iterations of the Marvel-created universe--namely, the contemporary Amazing Spider-Man universe and that of Spider-Man 2099. The latter is based on a 1992 comic series, which introduced an alternate future version of Spider-Man. The Spider-Man 2099 series was scripted by famed Marvel writer Peter David, who is also penning the plot for Edge of Time.

Spider-Man: Edge of Time will task players with saving the life of Peter Parker in the modern-day Spider-Man universe in order to prevent an errant timeline from creating a bleak, apocalyptic future. The game will feature "cause-and-effect" gameplay, where one Spider-Man action will affect the other Spider-Man's timeline.
