Japan Gamers Sound Off On NGP

Japanese gamers are a little concerned about the potential price point of Sony's upcoming NGP system, but by and large they're incredibly excited about it, according to a poll conducted online on Famitsu.com.

Nearly 80 percent of gamers polled expressed interest in purchasing the new portable, with 76.2% "definitely" wanting it and 15.9% still weighing their options. "I've been playing games since the Super NES, but this might be the platform I've wanted the most," one 26-year-old male told Famitsu. The remaining 7.9% who were "definitely uninterested" chiefly pointed out the NGP's close resemblance to modern smartphone technology, with some questioning whether Sony's new platform was really a "game system" at all.

As for the all-important price, the majority of respondents -- nearly 65% -- think the NGP will cost below 30,000 yen (about $364) in Japan. That would launch the system at a far more expensive price point than the PSP, which cost a little over 20,000 yen upon its 2004 release, but most gamers doubted Sony would drop the price of the next-gen portable anywhere near that low. "I really think that 30,000 yen for a portable gaming system is ridiculous," one commenter said, "but I also don't think Sony can make a profit if it were 25,000 yen."
